Comprehensive Care

Husband and wife

You are a midwife, assisting at someone else’s birth. Do good without show or fuss. Facilitate what is happening rather than what you think ought to be happening. If you must take the lead, lead so that the mother is helped, yet still free and in charge. When the baby is born, the mother will rightly say: “We did it ourselves!”
– From The Tao Te Ching

At Joy In Birth Midwifery, we focus on excellence, seeking to provide you with comprehensive, well-researched, individualized care. A benefit of midwifery care is its affordability. The cost of having your baby out of hospital with a midwife is just a fraction of the charges that are incurred in-hospital. In fact, our entire prenatal and birth package is approximately half the cost of a vaginal birth alone in the hospital!

Our expansive, affordable home birth package includes:

[two_third]

An initial consultation – typically consisting of a 1.5 hour appointment time, we will review your detailed health history, do a nutritional assessment, review paperwork, and answer any questions you may have. At this visit, a thorough physical exam is performed, which may include drawing blood for labs, a pelvic exam, and a pap test.

Prenatal visits – done in the comfort and convenience of your own home, appointments are scheduled in one hour time slots, where we will talk about nutrition, baby’s well being, your upcoming birth, and any questions you might have.  A normal prenatal schedule includes monthly visits until 29 weeks, then bi-monthly until 36 weeks, then weekly until birth.

Labor and birth support – this includes attendance by your midwife as well as a second skilled birth assistant. We will stay in phone contact during your early labor, and arrive at your home when you are in active labor. Our goal while at your home is to make you as comfortable as possible during your birth, providing the balance that years of experience give while helping to guide your babe into the world. Typically, your birth team will stay at your house 2-3 hours after birth,  to provide care for the immediate postpartum period, and make sure that breastfeeding is established.

Immediate postpartum care – after making sure that all is well with the delivery, and mom is settled in bed with her baby, we will assist in making sure baby is breastfeeding well, repair lacerations that may need suturing, perform a thorough newborn exam, and give instructions on normal newborn care.

Lactation consults – unlimited consultations are available up through six weeks.  It is so important to make sure that nursing gets off to a great start that we want to help you get all the help you need with breastfeeding. This practice is unique in that the midwife is also an IBCLC, giving you complete care for your postpartum needs.

Postpartum care – these visits for mom and the newborn typically include a visit at 2-3 days postpartum, then 1 week and six week visits. If additional postpartum visits are needed, or lactation consultations are specifically required due to breastfeeding issues, these are included at no extra charge.

California Newborn Screen ($120 value) – this testing, which is required by the state, is done at the 2-3 day postpartum visit. This test screens for many different metabolic and hematological disorders in the newborn, early detection of which aids in treatment options. We happily include it in our homebirth package so that your baby can be treated with all the gentle care he deserves, and to reduce the amount of travel and running around you have to do with a newborn.

24/7 availability  – throughout your pregnancy and the first six weeks postpartum, you have the assurance that you can reach your midwife anytime by phone or email. Any non-emergency calls are responded to within 24 hours, and systems are in place to talk to the midwife immediately if there is a need.

California birth certificate  – we will write the letters that you need for the state, and fill out the worksheet needed to obtain a birth certificate.

Optional newborn therapies  – this includes vitamin K (oral or injectable), and erythromycin ointment.
